On a beautiful Saturday morning, a couple weeks ago, we headed North to a little town called Stettler. It felt like Spring had finally arrived and we were thrilled to spend the day outside with Chelsey and Cody, a couple engaged to be married this Summer. It was such a refreshing day, warming the bones and making us feel like winter was finally on its way out. Man, were we fooled. But we made the most of the day, tromping through the snow, driving across the prairie, discovering random dead animals, and climbing through a rickety old barn.
Chelsey and Cody were so much fun to spend the day with; they quickly got accustomed to having a camera in their face as they tried to be smoochy. They were so relaxed and easy to work with, even when Christy discovered a freshly perished coyote in the barn, mouth crookedly agape in the hay below our feet, they took it all in stride.
Cody even stepped over for a closer look. His experience as a hunting guide warranted such an interest, while I had the heeby-jeebies and opted to avoid unnecessary bulbous eye contact. Earlier we had a similar run-in with a severed half-a-calf, frost covered spine sparkling in the sunlight, so... I had my fill of death and gore.
It was a pleasure to drive around Stettler and see how tight the community was. Everywhere we went Cody and Chelsey knew someone, even in the middle of a field. Snowmobilers were hunched over their lifeless machines and when they spotted Cody’s truck they wandered over to say hi and explain their misfortune. It’s awesome to live in a country where we can live like this, in wide open spaces but still so connected to each other, still sharing in life together. Cody and Chelsey’s wedding is going to be a lot of fun, we can’t wait.
